The Stories of U.S. (book)

The Stories of U.S.

The book was a #1 Bestseller on Amazon.com (Emigration and Immigration category) and a #1 New Release (in the Emigration and Immigration category and Children's Social Activists Biography category). Published by New Degree Press in December 2019.

The Stories of U.S. is a collection of the experiences of ten undocumented and first-generation immigrants who are living in the United States today. In the current political climate, oftentimes the stories of immigrants and first-generation Americans are tokenized and made into something that they are not.

Perhaps you have done the same thing and not even realized it when echoing something from the media without a second thought. It is time for that thoughtful reflection. This book gives you an intimate look into the lives of some of the immigrants whose daily lives are affected in sometimes dangerous ways by their immigration status.

You will learn about individuals who have overcome immense barriers to live lives that others take for granted including:

  • Aury, who immigrated to the United States with her mother. She now must navigate an educational system while trying to find her place in this strange new land.
  • Kabira, a first-generation immigrant, who wonders if she’ll ever see her grandparents again.
  • Pablito who lives each day knowing that his parents are undocumented. He wonders what the consequences might be for himself and his siblings.
  • And many more...

The Stories of U.S. will help you to gain a better understanding of both our own communities and the communities that surround us. While the immigration crisis is a political one, it is more so a humanitarian crisis at its core.

Delayed Recurrence of Atypical Pulmonary Carcinoid Cluster: A Rare Occurrence

Authors: Surani S, Tan J, Ahumada A, Surani SS, Sudhakaran S, Varon J

Background: Carcinoid is one of the most common tumors of the gastrointestinal tract followed by the tracheobronchial tree. Bronchial carcinoid compromises 20% of total carcinoid and accounts for 1-5% of pulmonary malignancies. Carcinoid can be typical or atypical, with atypical carcinoid compromises 10% of the carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid usually presents as peripheral lung lesion or solitary endobronchial abnormality. Rarely it can present as multiple endobronchial lesion. We hereby present a rare case of an elderly gentleman who had undergone resection of right middle and lower lobe of lung for atypical carcinoid. Seven years later he presented with cough. CT scan of chest revealed right hilar mass. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed numerous endobronchial polypoid lesions in the tracheobronchial tree. Recurrent atypical carcinoid was then confirmed on biopsy

Prolonged Ventricular Asystole: A Rare Adverse Effect of Hydrocodone Use

Authors: Sudhakaran S, Surani SS, Surani SR

Background: Prolonged ventricular asystole is a rare vagal reaction caused by hydrBcodone use. Sinus bradycardia is a characteristic presentation of the vasovagal response; examples of other presentations include arrest or atrioventricular block. Physicians need to be aware of ventricular asystole due to vagally-mediated atrioventricular block caused by hydrocodone or other opiates/ case report: We present a case of prolonged ventricular asystole in a young patient due to a vasovagal reaction caused by the hydrocodone found in the hydrocodone/acetaminophen combination/ conclusions: Ventricular asystole can be a rare complication of hydrocodone found in hydrocodone/acetaminophen. Physicians need to be aware of this adverse effect, rather then resorting to expensive diagnostic interventions.

Endobronchial Lipomatous Polyp: A Rare Benign Tumor of the Lung

Authors: Surani S, Allen K, Surani S, Varon J

Background: Endobronchial lipomatous polyp is a rare nonmalignant tumor of the lung. It comprises 5% of the benign lung tumor, with the majority of benign tumors being hamartoma. Lipomatous polyp often leads to endobronchial lesion, associated with postobstructive pneumonia, hemoptysis, and atelectasis. We hereby present a case and discussion of an elderly man with endobronchial lipomatous polyp, presenting as recurrent pneumonia.
